The most beautiful village in France

This village is Saint Guilhem le désert, in southern France. I’ve always loved this town because my parents were married in the abbey and that’s why my first name is Guilhem. This village is very famous in France and attracts many tourists throughout the year because the residents have managed to maintain the medieval village appearence.

Situated in the narrow valley of the Gellone river where it meets the steep sided gorge of the Hérault River, Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is essentially a medieval village located on the Chemin de St Jacques (St James’ Way) pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostella.

Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert is one of “The most beautiful villages of France”, and the Abbey of Gellone, along with the nearby Pont du Diable were designated UNESCO World Heritages sites in 1999.

Abbaye cachée derrière un magnifique saule pleureur

I went back to this village last week with my dear egyptian friend Ahmed to take some pictures of the old homes and of this beautiful Abbey built in 804 B.C.

What I love about this photo is the huge weeping willow just in front of the Abbey hiding most of its architecture and I like when vegetals plays with human achievements!
