Be my guest – Rolando Bunag Jr

A new category to share our passion for the photography!

I’m very pleased today to welcome my friend Rolando Bunag Jr I met this year on Facebook because we share the same passion for the photography and street photography in particular.

I invited Rolando to be the first guest of my new category “Be my guest“. I intend to regularly invite photographers from all over the world to show their work on my blog and to create a small community of photographers who like street and social photography.

If you also want to be my guest, it’s very simple, just send me a message by following this link.

Rolando, I’m very pleased to welcome you here as my first guest! I saw your work for the first time at the beginning of this year and I remember that I instantly loved the way you shoot! What can you tell me about you?

I’m Rolando Bunag Jr. Family members, good friends and colleagues call me JR. I’m from Manila, Philippines. I’ve been taking photos since 2007. I’m into Street Photography and Street Portraits similar to “Humans of New York” by Brandon and “Strangers” by Danny Santos.

How did you come to photography?

I started with a basic P&S camera (Sony Cyber-Shot T-Series) and was doing abstracts and sort of street/architecture photography back then, but after a couple of years, faded out. Then back on 2010 I was then introduced to Digital Rev and started watching their videos.

The Fuji X100s, the perfect camera for street photography

Then I saw the X100 (Fuji) and got interested (because of the retro-inspired look & feel) and came across a video about Street Photography and instantly fell in love with the concept, the idea behind it and the challenge.

I got hooked instantly. I bought my x100s last May 2014 (as a birthday gift to myself) and here I am, doing Street Photography.

How do you educate yourself to take better pictures?

I read books, lots of them (Street Photography books). I bought a couple and looking forward to get more. I also watch videos from SP veterans and well-known Streettogs. And of course, online articles and Street Photography blogs as well.

I immensely enjoy learning, it’s really LOVE for me. Like my “Feel-Good” moment. And of course, taking more pictures, learning from my own experiences as well.

Among your works, which one is your favorite? Why?

That’s a tough question!

I mean I still have a long way to go and I’ve been “missing in action” lately because of my corporate job and other things. But no excuses though, I know it’s really up to me and I just need to push myself more and discipline myself and remain focused.

But yeah, going back to your question, out of the 37 images I posted on my Street Photography Blog (, and if I need to choose only one, it has to be the “Little Thinker” which is more like a Street Portrait rather than Street Photography.

Exactly what it is you want to say with your photographs, and how do you actually get your photographs to do that?

Another tough question to be honest.

I just wanted to share how I see the world from where I’m from through my camera’s perspective and how I look at it. I believe there’s always something beautiful and magical on what goes on every single day. Living life and what transpires from different scenarios, situations and environment.

There’s always something candid that can display something unique and different, that “spur-of-the-moment” act or emotion. I do this though through patience, sometimes I will stay in one place, location or area and picture something out, then I wait for that “right moment”.

What motivates you to continue taking pictures economically, politically, intellectually or emotionally?

My motivation is Happiness and Creativity. I’ve always been on the creative side of things even though I have a corporate job. Taking Street Photography is LOVE for me. It takes away my stress, makes me smile, you know like having that “Feel-Good” moment.

It’s like I’m on a different world, a different phase, and a different side my personality. I do this purely based on hobby and fun but comes with strong emotion knowing that I can do better, and hopefully share my work to the world.

I mean I have a long way to go and have tons to learn but the fact that I know I can get better at what I do it’s something I look forward to. I have also some projects in mind that I really wanted to finalize this year and then take it full force by 2016.

So yeah, definitely exciting times ahead when it comes to my LOVE for Street Photography.

Thank you very much Rolando for your time and having shared with us about your passion for Street Photography!

I’ve to say that I share with you this passion for Happiness and Love and I think you’re totally right when you say it takes away stress. I love your work and I can feel that we share the same way to practice photography! Hope that one day we can go together for a photo outing 🙂
